Joey Bishop

Joey Bishop (born Joseph Abraham Gottlieb, February 3, 1918 – October 17, 2007) was an American comedian, actor, and television personality. He was best known as a member of the Rat Pack:

Bishop was the least flamboyant but highly respected member of the famous Rat Pack, alongside:

  • Frank Sinatra
  • Dean Martin
  • Sammy Davis Jr.
  • Peter Lawford

He often played the straight man in their performances — cool, deadpan, and dry-witted — and was responsible for writing much of the group’s material during their Las Vegas heyday in the 1960s.

Joey Bishop started as a nightclub comic and became known for his dry delivery, sarcastic tone, and quick comebacks. He was part of the first wave of stand-up comics to transition from live venues to TV.

  • The Joey Bishop Show (sitcom) (1961–1965): A fictional sitcom where he played a TV talk show host.
  • The Joey Bishop Show (talk show) (1967–1969): A real late-night talk show on ABC, where his sidekick was a then-unknown Regis Philbin.
  • He was also a frequent guest host for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show.
  • Ocean’s 11 (1960) – the original film with the Rat Pack.
  • Sergeants 3 (1962)
  • Texas Across the River (1966), with Dean Martin

Bishop was known for his cool, understated style, often contrasted with the louder personas of his Rat Pack peers. While not as flashy, he was respected for his comedic timing and writing chops.

He outlived all other Rat Pack members, passing away in 2007 at the age of 89, making him the last surviving member of the original core group.
